20km/12mi east of Nola on the road to Avellino is a side road leading north (5km/3mi) to the pilgrimage center of Montevergine (1,270m/4,191ft; cableway from Mercogliano). In the church of the monastery founded by St William of Vercelli in 1119 on the ruins of a Temple of Cybele are a number of fine tombs and, in the south aisle, a chapel with a figure of the Virgin venerated as miraculous; the head of the figure is Byzantine. Pilgrimages take place at Easter and on September seventh-eighth.
It is a 45minutes' climb from the monastery to the top of Montevergine (1,493m/4,927ft), crowned by a large cross, from which there are magnificent views of the Bay of Naples and Salerno and the mountains of the interior.
