Montevergine

20km/12mi east of Nola on the road to Avellino is a side road leading north (5km/3mi) to the pilgrimage center of Montevergine (1,270m/4,191ft; cableway from Mercogliano). In the church of the monastery founded by St William of Vercelli in 1119 on the ruins of a Temple of Cybele are a number of fine tombs and, in the south aisle, a chapel with a figure of the Virgin venerated as miraculous; the head of the figure is Byzantine.
