Nanjing - Old City Wall

Today it is still possible to see certain sections of the city wall which was built at the beginning of the Ming dynasty at the end of the 14th C and which at one time encircled the whole of the old center of Nanjing. This defensive wall was originally 33km/21mi long, 12m/39ft high and 8m/26ft thick.

The only section of the wall that is preserved in its original state is the southern China Gate (Zongshan Men) of the city fortifications. The 128m/420ft long construction surrounds three courtyards. From the roof, the remains of the town wall and the moat can be seen.
