Wat Mahathat Description
Wat Mahathat in Ratchdamnoen Road, previously known as Wat Phra Boromathat until 1915, is Thailand's most famous temple and also one of its oldest. Recognizable from afar by its 74-m (243-ft) tall chedi, whose gold spire weighs 216 kg, the exact date of the founding of this temple remains unknown (around the second half of the 10th c.). Extensive alterations, after which little of the old site remained, were carried out on the temple and its surroundings between 1157 and 1257.
