Gavnø Manor

Denmark Hotels
There are a number of interesting stately homes in the countryside around Næstved. On the island of Gavnø southwest of Næstved stands Gavnø Manor. The estate, a former nunnery, became privately owned in 1584 and in 1755 the house was converted into a Roccoco mansion by Otto Thott (1703-85). It possesses one of Denmark's largest picture collections and a magnificent library, which at the time of Thott's death contained some 138,000 volumes. Note also the church in the south wing, with an altar and pulpit carved by Abel Schrøder.
In the park tulips bloom in the spring followed by summer flowers, ornamental shrubs and roses.
