Gavnø Manor

There are a number of interesting stately homes in the countryside around Næstved. On the island of Gavnø southwest of Næstved stands Gavnø Manor. The estate, a former nunnery, became privately owned in 1584 and in 1755 the house was converted into a Roccoco mansion by Otto Thott (1703-85). It possesses one of Denmark's largest picture collections and a magnificent library, which at the time of Thott's death contained some 138,000 volumes.
