Description
In its name the Castello Manfredonico in Mussomeli commemorates an Arab fortress which existed here. In place of the latter Manfredi III Chiaramonte built the powerful Castello Manfredonico, which was named after him and which stands 2km/1mi to the east on an 80m/262ft high strategically favorable hilltop overlooking the town. Its position and fortifications make it one of the most impressive Sicilian castles of the 14th century, during which period the Chiara-monte were the most powerful noble family on the island (the Palazzo Chiaramonte in Palermo dates from the same time).

A perimeter wall crowned with battlements surrounds the fortress with its keep and other buildings. Inside the castle the Gothic chapel and a great "Barons' Hall" are preserved.
