Wittelsbach Fountain
(Local Name: Wittelsbacherbrunnen) The Wittelsbacherbrunnen (Wittelsbach Fountain; 1893-95) was erected to commemorate the completion of the new municipal water-supply system.
The fountain, the work of the sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand, is picturesquely situated on the east side of Lenbachplatz, in front of the clumps of trees in Maximiliansplatz. In its large circular basin, with a high fountain base supporting two smaller basins, are two pieces of sculpture - a youth on a water-horse hurling a boulder and a woman riding another aquatic creature pouring water from a vessel (symbolizing the power and beneficence of water).
