Munich - Odeon Square Odeonsplatz

Odeonsplatz, at the southern end of Ludwigstrasse, one of Munich's two monumental 19th C. streets, was part of Leo von Klenze's ambitious scheme of urban expansion. Surrounded by several fine buildings it was conceived in celebration of the flourishing Bavarian kingdom, restored in 1806.

On its east side Odeonsplatz is bounded by the Basargebäude (Bazaar), a long, narrow building also designed by Leo von Klenze and constructed by Johann Ulrich Himbsel. To the rear lies the Hofgarten.
Former Odeon
The former Odeon, designed by Leo von Klenze and erected in 1826-28 as a concert hall, occupies the southwest corner of the square. It was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War, when the columns supporting the tiered interior collapsed leaving only the outer walls and courtyard. Partly rebuilt in the 1950s it now houses the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior.
Hofgartentor
The Hofgartentor, erected at the eastern end of Brienner Strasse in 1816, gives access to the Hofgarten.
Leuchtenberg-Palais
This Neo-Classical mansion (1816-21), one of Leo von Klenze's designs, here modeled on the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, set the pattern for the development of Ludwigstrasse. Count von Leuchtenberg was Napoleon's stepson Eugène de Beauharnais, for a time Viceroy of Italy, who married a daughter of King Max I Joseph of Bavaria. The palace, rebuilt after being severely damaged during the Second World War, became the headquarters of the Bavarian Ministry of Finance in 1966.
