München - Siegestor
This triumphal arch, modeled on the Arch of Constantine in Rome, was built by Friedrich von Gärtner in 1843-52 as the terminal point of Ludwigstrasse. It commemorates the valor of the Bavarian Army, being the counterpart therefore to the Feldherrnhalle at the south end of Ludwidgstrasse which was built to honor Bavaria's military leaders.
The Siegestor was badly damaged during the Second World War and was not fully restored. Its new inscription (1958) reads: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, calling for peace". The arch is topped by a figure of Bavaria in a chariot drawn by lions.
