Mühlhausen - St Mary's Church Marienkirche
The 14th C parish church of St Mary (Marienkirche) in Mühlhausen, in which Thomas Müntzer once preached, is the largest church in Thuringia after Erfurt Cathedral, a Gothic hall-church with double aisles flanking the nave and an 86m/282ft high tower. It has rich sculptural decoration (on the south front four lifelike figures, including Emperor Charles IV and his wife), Late Gothic winged altars (15th and 16th C.) and a large Triumphal Cross group. Here, Thomas Müntzer proclaimed his program to the townspeople and the peasants of the surrounding area.
