St Ignatius Attractions
The small town of St Ignatius (pop. 790) was founded in 1854 by Jesuit Missionaries. It is the home of the St Ignatius Mission on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The town had the first residence school for Indians, first hospital, first saw mill, and first flour mill in the state. The mission was built with local materials by Indians and missionaries in 1891.
The Flathead Indian Museum in St Ignatius features turn-of-the-20th C American Indian clothing. Displays include tools, pottery and artifacts.
The St Ignatius Mission in northwest Montana was built with local materials by Indians and missionaries in 1891. The walls and ceilings have 61 original paintings by Brother Joseph Carignano, the mission cook.
