Miles City (pop. 8,500) was named for Col Nelson A Miles, whose troops first stayed in the area. Nelson Miles arrived in the area in 1876 to force the Cheyenne and Sioux to return to the reservations. Fort Keogh was built on the site in 1877 and used as a base for controlling the local tribes.
