Libby (pop. 2,600) was originally settled in the 1860s. The northwestern Montana town was named for the daughter of one of the men who discovered gold in a nearby creek.
The Heritage Museum in Libby is a 12-sided log structure that includes historical information about the Kootenai Indians, early trappers, lumbermen, women, and miners who came to the area. Wildlife exhibits feature grizzly bear, bald eagles, deer, and other animals that can be found in the area.
The Kootenai National Forest features more than 2.2 million acres. The Whitefish Range, Purcell Mountains, Bitterroot Range, Salish Mountains, and Cabinet Mountains are all part of the area. There are more than 100 lakes inside the boundaries of the Kootenai that are stocked with fish.
