Havre (pop. 9,600) was named after the French city Le Havre more than 100 years ago. The town became the transportation hub of the area, providing goods and supplies to the area trappers, miners and military stationed at Fort Assinniboine.
Havre Beneath the Streets is an underground mall that takes visitors back to 100 years ago. Original buildings, built in 1904, include the Sporting Eagle Saloon, Fongs Laundry, Shorty Young's Office, Gourley Brother's Bakery as well as an opium den and a bordello.
The Rocky Boy Indian Reservation is located in northcentral Montana close to the Canadian border. It was established in 1916 and named for a Chippewa leader whose Indian name meant "Stone Child" and later changed to "Rocky Boy." The Chippewa and Cree Indians maintain a strong heritage through the annual Pow-Wow, featuring authentic Native American dancers and competitions.
