The town of Bozeman, in the south of the state, owes its name to John M. Bozeman, who established a trail from Wyoming to here through Indian country and thus incurred the continuing hostility of the Oglala Indians under their chief Red Cloud. The main attraction of Bozeman is the Museum of the Rockies, with its unique dinosaur remains, including the largest skeleton ever found of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The Gallatin County Pioneer Museum in Bozeman features an authentic 1870s log cabin, an American Indian exhibit, an agricultural room with early farm and ranch tools, and the sheriff's room highlighted by hanging gallows, a visitor's cell, and items collected from law breakers.
