Montalcino - Fortezza

The massive fortezza on the top of the hill, built in 1361, is in an excellent state of preservation. In the 16th century it was the last refuge of 600 Sienese, who fled here when their city was under siege by the Emperor Charles V and established a kind of government in exile. Some of the rooms are open to the public; there is a fine panoramic view from the castle.
