A short drive south of Mollendo is the town of Mejía and the nearby Sanctuario Nacional Lagunas de Mejía. (Mejía Lakes National Bird Sanctuary). The sanctuary is an 8km / 5mi stretch of coastal marsh, that attracts large flocks of domestic and migratory birds. Among the birds that frequent the sanctuary are the rare parihuana (Chilean flamingo), the Peruvian pelican, Black Skimmer, Franklin's Gull, Peruvian Pelican, Harri's Hawk and the American kestrel. In total there are some 157 species of birds that use the Sanctuario Nacional Lagunas de Mejía.
The migratory birds are usually here between January and March and the best viewing time is in the mornings. The park can be accessed on foot, by bike, or by car, and guides are available.
