Mohács Island

(Local Name: Mohácsi sziget) Before corrective measures were taken to prevent flooding the 380sq.km (150sq.mi.) area between the Danube and its branch near Baracska was the river's flood basin; today a number of villages stand on Mohács Island (Mohácsi sziget). In spite of the measures taken floods do still occur from time to time, the last occasion being in 1956 when almost all the houses were destroyed. A ferry connects the island with the town.
