St Goar
St Goar lies below the massive ruined castle of Rheinfels. The Stiftskirche (15th C) has a Romanesque crypt of 1137, 15th C. wall paintings and marble tombs of the 16th and 17th centuries. The ruined castle is the largest of its kind on the Rhine (museum and view).

Rheinfels Castle
The ruined castle of Burg Rheinfels dominates the passage of the Lorelei. It was originally built in 1254. The castle is historically recognized as having been dismantled by the French in 1797. The castle stood as a mighty fortress, this evidence is found through plans and illustrations found in the former chapel.
