Columbia began in 1819 and was originally named Smithton but was renamed in 1821. Columbia offers numerous recreational opportunities such as golf, tennis, swimming, jogging, hiking and cycling.
The University of Missouri in Columbia was the first public university west of the Mississippi River; it opened its doors in 1839.
Shelter Gardens features more than 300 varieties of trees and shrubs, and 15,000 annuals and perennials. Various themed gardens are featured including, desert, rock, conifer, and a garden for the blind.

Housed in a traditional wood-hewn structure with weathered boards and broad porches, the Walters Boone County Historical Museum presents the heritage and of Boone County. The history exhibits highlight the role of banking, farming, insurance and medicine, politics, and education in the development of Boone County and the surrounding area. The Montminy Art Gallery showcase the work of local artists and art organizations in changing exhibits.
