Oxford (pop. 14,000) was established in the late 1830s and named in an attempt to have the state university established here. The University of Mississippi known as "Ole Miss" was built in Oxford and opened in 1848.

William Faulkner used Oxford as the basis for the fictional town of Jefferson in some of his novels.
