Chisholm (pop. 5,000) surrounds Longyear Lake which is named for E J Longyear, who explored the present site of Chisholm in 1892 and discovered the first local mine. The city was named for Archibald Mark Chisholm, a young Scotsman, from Alexandria, Ontario, Canada. By 1901, the year of incorporation, the town was booming due to the mining industry.
Chisholm's Ironworld allows visitors to discover Old World customs and traditions through living history, interactive exhibits and displays. The Iron Man Memorial greets visitors at the front gate. The children's area features a carousel, miniature golf course, spiral slide and strolling musicians.

The Minnesota Museum of Mining is housed in a Chisholm castle built in 1933 and features exhibits about mining that include a replica of an underground mine drift, jet piercing drill, mining trucks and a railroad diorama.
