P.C. Austin, part owner in a sawmill here in 1839, built a boat dock for himself. When he enlarged it for the use of others, he put a street light on a pole for a lighthouse and it became known as Austin's Dock, later as Austin Port, and finally as Port Austin. It is well known for the sunrises and sunsets on Lake Huron.
