Tepoztlan Attractions
About 80km/50mi south of Mexico City and 26km/16 mi. east of Cuernavaca lies the picturesque little town of Tepoztlán (Náhuatl: "place of the axe"; 1701 m (5583 ft); population 65,000; fiestas; Carnival Thursday; November 1st and 2nd, All Saints' Day, All Souls' Day; markets: Sunday and Wednesday).
Dominican Convent
An important Dominican convent is in the town, above which rise bizarre cliff-like rock formations. This fortress-like sacral building dates from between 1559 and 1588 and was probably designed by the Spanish architect Francisco Becerra. Interesting Capillas Posas (procession chapels) with gables and Gothic fluted vaults stand in the corners of the atrium. Their workmanship, however, cannot be compared with that of Huejotzingo and Calpan. To the right in front of the remains of an open chapel can be seen a 16th c. stone cross.
