Tepalcingo Attractions
Some 7km/4.3mi south of Zazualpan de Amilpas on MEX 160 lies the small town of Tepalcingo (population: 16,000). One of its six churches, the Shrine of Jesús Nazareno (1759-89), is an outstanding example of Mexican-Indian Baroque. The richly sculpted faáade contrasts with those of other Baroque and Churrigueresque buildings in the province in lacking the usual estípites (pilasters) and Salomonic columns. It is carved almost in the manner of an altarpiece with scenes from the New Testament interpreted through Indian eyes. Inside, note the altarpieces (c. 1800) posing as paintings. They are ascribed to Juan de Sáenz.
On the third Friday of Lent Topalcingo witnesses the climax of a major pilgrimage together with a fería involving much merrymaking.
