Oaxtepec Attractions

Approximately 20km/12.4mi to the westof Yautepec is Cocoyoc, from which a side-road leads in 4km/2.5mi to the spa of Oaxtepec (1085 m (3561 ft); population 12,000). This village has been converted recently into a centre of state social tourism. In pre-Spanish times the Aztec ruler Moctezuma I is supposed to have had a summer palace here.

In the village there is another Dominican convent dating from the first half of the 16th c. which now houses a school and, occasionally, an exhibition of archaeological finds from the state of Morelos. Compared with other monasteries this one is of minor importance. Charming naãve pictures of saints and monks, and frescos showing Mudéjar influence can be seen in the cloister. The fortified church with its Gothic groined vaulting is divided into five parts by large columns and double arches.
