Mexicali Attractions
From Tecate it is 140km/87mi to Mexicali (3 m (10 ft); population 880,000). The name is formed from the first syllables of "Mexico" and "California". As recently as 1898 a Cucupá Indian village stood here with the name Laguna del Alamo. Today it is the dynamic capital of Baja California Norte, a centre for the high quality processing and service industries and agriculture (cotton, fruit, vegetables), as well as being a border crossing-point connecting with its sister town of Calexico in the USA. In the University Museum there are facilities for studying palaeontology, archaeology, ethnography and the history of missionary work in Lower California.
