An approximately 35km/22mi journey northwards along the MEX 43 leads across Lake Cuitzeo, which is almost dried up, and on to the small town of Cuitzeo (1883 m (6180 ft), population 17,000). This former fishing village proves a popular destination because of its Augustinian convent built in 1551. The church which belongs to it has a beautifully
ornamented façade in a predominantly Spanish-Plateresque style. Above the portal can be seen a pierced heart, the emblem of the Augustinian order. The double eagle of the Casa Austria is sculpted into the columns which flank it. The tower was built at the beginning of the 17th c. The defensive character of the church and the convent, with its once much larger atrium, is evident. The remains of a fresco depicting the Last Judgment can be seen on the left at the beginning of the portico. The Open Chapel is integrated into the third arch of the portico.
From Cuitzeo it is a further 30km/19mi to Yuríria.
