Champoton Attractions
In the pre-hispanic period the port of Champotón lay at the heart of an area of extensive Indian settlement forming the cultural interface between Guatemala, Yucatán and central Mexico. It is more than likely that Toltec culture was intermixed here with that of Mayan tribes living under Toltec domination, tribes who after the 10th c. migrated east to be absorbed by the Maya already living there. According to old chronicles - not altogether reliable - both the Itzá and Xiú tribes were at different times temporarily settled in the area. The town today is predominantly a fishing port. It makes a convenient base for deep-sea angling expeditions and for excursions into the interior.
