Atlixco Attractions
Heading along the MEX 190 brings the visitor to Atlixco (Náhuatl: "Place Above the Water"; 1885 m (6187 ft); population 160,000), some 31km/19mi from Puebla. The town has a number of Poblano-style buildings. The parish church (16th c., built over in the 19th c.) in the main square, the stucco façade of the earlier La Merced Church, and the Franciscan fortress-like convent church (16th c.) on the the Cerrito de San Miguel (San Miguel Hill) with a sober colonial-Plateresque faáade are all worth seeing.
During the last week in September Indian groups hold the colourful "Atlixcáyoti" festival, which features dancing.
