Mexico City - Monumento a la Raza

The westerly route from the pilgrimage site leads from Buenavista station (Estación Central) along Avenida Insurgentes Norte to a busy traffic junction, where Calzado Vallejo, Avenid Rio Consulado and Insurgentes Norte all meet. On the roundabout stands the massive pyramidal Monumento a la Raza, a monument to the mingling of the European and Indian races built in 1964 by a team of sculptors under the direction of Luis Lelo de Larrea. Every year on October 12th, the date on which Columbus discovered the New World, the Día de la Raza is celebrated here. Nearby stands the Hospital de la Raza, with frescos by David Siqueiros and Diego Rivera.
