Le Virgen de los Remedios Description
2km/1.3mi north of the El Toreo bullring the Avenida Manuel Avila Camacho joins the Avenida 16 de Septiembre. Going left along this and continuing along Calle de los Remedios the visitor will see the church of La Virgen de los Remedios, consecrated in 1629 and a place of pilgrimage in which a statue of the Virgin brought from Spain by the conquistadors is venerated. During the struggles for independence (1810-21) the royalist troops carried flags bearing the image of this Virgin of Perpetual Succour, while the victorious Mexicans fought under the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe. There is an annual fiesta in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios on September 8th.
