Mexico City - Calle Francisco Sosa

From Insurgentes Sur the taxi will turn left into Río Churubusco and then right along Avenida Universidad into the district of Coyoacán (Náhuatl, "town of the coyotes"), which has preserved much of the tranquil atmosphere of colonial times. At the corner of Avenida Universidad and Calle Francisco Sosa, a few minutes from the Viveros and Quevedo underground stations, stand the modern church of El Altillo ("The Hillock") and the little 18th c. Baroque Capilla de San Antonio (Panzacola). Calle Francisco Sosa, lined by handsome 17th and 18th c. houses, leads to the main square, Plaza Hidalgo, in which will be seen the church of San Juan Bautista, built by Dominicans in 1538. Very typical of the style of the period, it boasts a fine, richly carved doorway on the side leading into the atrium which has Indian decoration. On the left inside will be found the interesting High Baroque Capilla de Santísima.
