Description
From the Piazza del Duomo in Messina, we proceed to the City Hall on the Piazza Municipio and to the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, which was reopened in 1986 after restoration work. Further north on the Via Garibaldi, a visit is recommended to the city park of Villa Mazzini and the Fontana del Nettuno Fountain of Neptune, which was built in 1557 and, like the Orion fountain, is a work of Montorsoli. Whereas the latter depicts the mythical founder of the city of Messina, the former shows the god of the sea caught between Scylla and Charybdis, the two monsters of the Strait of Messina. The Via della Liberta begins at this fountain and leads out of the city towards the exhibition ground of the Fiera di Messina (every August) and to the museum.
