Menton - Old Town

Along the Montée des Logettes and the narrow rue Longue, the former main street of the Old Town of Menton, the atmosphere of which is thoroughly Italian (a tunnel now runs under this area), we pass the remains of the town fortifications. On the left an imposing flight of steps (Rampes St Michel) leads up to an observation terrace. Here on the left side of the Place de la Conception stands the Parish Church of St Michel (17th century; winged altar by Manchello 1569) and higher up is the Eglise de la Conception of 1685. Both churches are in the Italian Jesuit style.

On the old castle hill, reached via the rue du Vieux Château or the Montée du Souvenir, lies the Old Cemetery (altitude 46m/151ft; fine view) which was laid out in the 19th century and has become the last resting place for rich foreigners of various faiths.
