Kahanu National Tropical Botanical Garden is a documented collection of plants important to Hawaii. Visitors will discover the cultural relationship between the people and plants, which were transported around the Pacific in ancient canoes. Pi`ilanihale, the pre-Christian temple dates back to the 16th century and was added to over many years. Uniformly sized lava rocks have been piled into a layer-cake type array which hugs the curves of the hill it covers. Archaeologists have estimated it took 128,000 man-days to build. The structure is a national landmark.
The other attractive feature of the site is the views of the ocean and the way the waves crash on the offshore rocky islands.
