Sikandra is the final resting place of Emperor Akbar. The Emperor himself commissioned the construction of his own mausoleum in 1602.
Constructed of red sandstone and marble, there are four gates but three are for decorative purposes only. The entrance to Sikandra is topped with white marble cupolas and minarets, which are reminiscent of the Taj Mahal.
The structure features Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, and Jain motifs, which signify the new religion that Akbar started - the Deen-e-Ilahi.
The tomb consists of five floors, each with spacious cloisters, massive arches, exquisite carvings, paintings and inlay work of geometric and floral designs.
