The ferry port of Hyannis, on the south coast of the peninsula, is the busy hub of Cape Cod life. On Lewis Bay, in which many yachts sway at anchor, is a monument commemorating the murdered President Kennedy. (The Kennedy family have a holiday retreat in the Hyannis Port district.)
Traveling between Hyanis and Cape Cod Canal, the Cape Cod Central Railroad passes cranberry bogs, woodlands, the Great Salt marsh and picturesque villages. The Cape Cod Central also makes special dinner train trips where diners enjoy a five course gourmet meals on the three hour round trip.

Kennedy came here with friends and family many times throughout his life. He once said, "the Cape is the one place I can think and be alone." There are oral histories by Kennedy's colleagues and regularly changing thematic exhibits. As well, there is a memorial to JFK Jr. who died in a plane crash in 1999.
