Salisbury was originally a settlement at the intersection of American Indian trails and the Wicomico River. It began as a stop for freight and passenger coaches and then became a railroad freight center.
Salisbury has numerous parks and recreation areas that feature hiking and biking trails, waterways for canoeing and kayaking, and birding areas.
The Edward H. Nabb Research Center contains artifacts and historical records, genealogy, rare books, and letters from the Civil War period. The center highlights the historical and cultural heritage of the greater Delmarva region.
Pemberton Hall was built by Isaac Handy and his wife Anne in 1741. The home and plantation was one of the first established in Wicomico County. The 207-acre park offers hiking on nature trails as well as environmental education, historical interpretation or special event activities. The Wicomico County Heritage Center is also located within the park.

Poplar Hill is an excellent example of 18th century country Georgian architecture. Much of the hardware, windowpanes, and intricate woodwork is original to the home.
Tips: Open for tours on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month from 1 - 4 p.m.
The Salisbury Zoological Park provides natural habitat enclosures for almost 500 species native to North, Central and South America. The Zoo began 1954 when some animals were placed on permanent exhibition in the City Park.
