Mariana - Cathedral

The Cathedral (Basílica da Sé), built between 1711 and 1760, is dedicated to the Assumption. The nave is separated from the aisles by arcades. The portico has sculpture by Aleijadinho; the gilding of the retablo on the high altar and the painting of the Baptism of Christ are by Ataíde. The German-made organ of 1701, decorated with Chinese motifs, was presented to the church in 1751 by Dom João V of Portugal. The ceiling painting in the choir is by Manuel Rebelo e Sousa (1760).
