Knidos - Town walls
|
|
The part of Knidos built on the mainland at a date which cannot be established with any certainty had a regular street layout, although - as at Priene - the rising ground made terracing necessary. Running along the crest of the ridge above the theater and the steep slopes above is a long stretch of the town wall. It extends from the old naval harbor to the acropolis (285m/935ft) and, with the walls and towers surviving almost intact, creates one of the finest examples of Hellenistic fortifications. The ascent is fairly strenuous.
