Marburg - St Elizabeth's Church

Marburg's finest building is the famous St Elizabeth's Church (1235-83; towers ca. 1340). After the Liebfrauenkirche in Trier, it is the earliest church in Germany in purely Gothic style.

The original furnishings are almost completely preserved, including (in the sacristy) the golden shrine (ca. 1250) which until 1539 contained the relics of St Elizabeth of Thuringia.

In the choir are a carved wooden figure of St Elizabeth (15th C.) and 13th and 15th C. stained glass. In the south transept are the tombs of Hessian princes (13th-15th C.). In the chapel under the north tower can be seen the tomb of President Hindenburg (1847-1934).
