The Bahamas are a string of islands located at the north end of the Caribbean. The archipelago consists of approximately 700 islands and more than 2,500 cays. Some of the islands lie only 50 miles off the coast of Florida. Most of the population lives on the island of New Providence where the main town of Nassau is located. Many of the islands and cays are uninhabited.

The Bahamas thrive mainly on tourism, with visitors drawn here by the sand beaches and luxury resorts. Cruise ships are also popular with many ships departing from Florida.
