Mandu - Royal Enclave Group

The Royal Enclave group consists of ruins that are the most frequented attractions in Mandu.

Jahaz Mahal (or the Ship Palace) is the most famous building in Mandu. Built as a ship-like structure with two lakes on the east and west-side of the palace, the Jahaz Mahal was the home of a harem for Ghiyas-ud-din, son of Mohammed Shah. Legend has it that this harem was home to 15,000 maidens.

Taveli Mahal houses the antiquity gallery of the Archeological Survey of India. Exhibits include stone images and fragments of utensils and vessels.

Hindola Mahal (or Swing Palace) has walls that slope creating the impression that the walls are swaying.

The Mosque of Dilawar Khan, the founder of Mandu, was built in 1405 making it one of the earliest Islamic building in Mandu. The central court boasts Hindu elements such as a main entrance, columns and ceiling.

Champa Baoli has a step-well and underground cool rooms for use in summer. A ventilation system was used to keep the palace complex cool. Adjacent there is a hammam or hot bath.

Gada Shah's Shop and House, built in 1520, is a massive building in partial ruin. This was a warehouse for saffron and musk, and the size of the shop shows that Gada Shah was a man of wealth and power.
