Bethel (pop. 2,400) is located on the banks of the Androscoggin River in the Appalachian Mountains. The area offers a variety of recreational opportunities including swimming, camping, boating, fishing, and nearby skiing.
The Big Adventure Center in Bethel offers a laser-tag arena, indoor rock climbing, bowling, arcade, 18 hole miniature golf and two water slides. The rock climbing gym has 25 different rope courses as well as a bouldering cave. Big Adventure has a three-level laser tag arena featuring ramps, bridges, mazes, and a real Maine forest.

The Mason House Museum in Bethel is a 1813 Federal style home which belonged to Dr Moses Mason who was a US Representative to Congress from 1833-37. The house contains 18th and 19th century decorative arts displays, furniture, and features 1830s wall murals thought to have been painted by Rufus Porter.
The house is open year round with a special Christmas theme during the first week of December when it is decorated in nineteenth century Christmas fashion.

The newest addition to the Bethel Historical Society is the 1821 O'Neil Robinson House which is adjacent to the Mason House. The house is equipped with climate-controlled storage and the building offers museum space and a library facility.
