Presque Isle (pop. 9,500) is the main industrial center in Aroostook County. It is also a good base from which to explore nearby Aroostock State Park. The Read Art Gallery on the University of Maine Main Street campus is not to be missed.

Burnham Tavern Museum
The Burnham Tavern in Machias was built in the early 1770's and is perhaps the oldest building in eastern Maine. The museum displays artifacts and memorabilia from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Gates House, Machiasport, Maine
The Gates House near Machiasport is an 1807 Federal style residence, partially restored. On display are artifacts pertaining to local history including models of the 'Margaretta' and the 'Unity.'
