Presque Isle (pop. 9,500) is the main industrial center in Aroostook County. It is also a good base from which to explore nearby Aroostock State Park. The Read Art Gallery on the University of Maine Main Street campus is not to be missed.

The Nylander Museum displays rocks, minerals, fossils, shells and American Indian artifacts, as well as plants and mounted birds.

The fort at the Fort Kent State Historic Site was built in 1839 and contains a wooden blockhouse. There are picnic facilities at the site.

The Acadian Village displays a number of reconstructed 19th century buildings, including a general store, schoolhouse blacksmith shop, homes, church, and a museum.The village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Machias (pop. 2,400) is a popular base to explore the Machias Bay area. Activities here include hiking, sea kayaking, charter boat sightseeing tours, bird watching, beachcombing and sunbathing, canoeing, and fishing.The Machias River forms a gorge near the town center just off Main Street.

The Gates House near Machiasport is an 1807 Federal style residence, partially restored. On display are artifacts pertaining to local history including models of the 'Margaretta' and the 'Unity.'

Houlton (pop. 6,500) is located on the Meduxnekeag River near the eastern border of Maine. There is a historical museum and an art museum in the town, although they are not always open to the public.

The Oakfield Railroad Museum features railroad memorabilia including photos, vintage signs, a restored caboose, motor car and a manually propelled pedal car.

The Lumbermen's Museum is a nine-building complex that shows Patten's history of logging. Exhibits include old logging equipment, a blacksmith shop, and a replica of an 1820s lumber camp.

ATTRACTION IS CLOSED.The John E and Walter D Webb Museum of Vintage Fashion is located in an 1894 home in Island Falls. It features antique clothing displayed in twelve rooms with different themes.

Covering more than 6,000 acres of forest and river, the Gordon Manuel Wildlife Management Area is a popular recreational area, particularly with anglers and hunters.

This large nature park lies in the north of the state round Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak.The land was given to Maine in 1931 and features numberous hiking trails.
