Taplow - Cliveden House
About 2mi/3km upstream from Maidenhead, Cliveden House stands high above the river. Until 1966 it was the seat of the Astor family, who bequeathed it to the National Trust in 1942. Since 1986 it has also operated as a hotel. The house is surrounded by Cliveden Woods, charming riverside woods on the Buckinghamshire bank of the Thames.
The Cliveden Estate was designed by Sir Charles Barry in 1849. It is set high on the cliffs above the Thames with miles of woodland walks. At the northern end of the estate there is a series of formal and informal gardens with individual character.
