Magdeburg - Cathedral Dom

In the Domplatz in Magdeburg, towards the south end of the old town, stands the Cathedral, an aisled basilica built between 1209 and 1520. Among the many treasures of art in the interior, particularly in the ambulatory, are the alabaster figures of St Maurice and the Risen Christ (both 1467), the Gothic choir-stalls (c. 1340), the seated figures of the Emperor Otto I and his wife Editha (1230-40), a number of fine grave-slabs (including that of Archbishop Wichmann, late 12th century) and Ernst Barlach's memorial for the dead of the First World War (1929). On the Paradise Doorway can be seen figures of the Wise and Foolish Virgins (c. 1245-50). Below the choir are the excavated remains of the earlier Ottonian church (begun 955, burned down 1207).

In the Domplatz are a number of Baroque house-fronts (rebuilt) and the town's oldest house, a half-timbered building of around 1600.
