Description
(Local Name: Ministerio de Hacienda) The Ministry of Finance occupies the old Custom House (Antigua Aduana) of 1777, close to the Puerta del Sol, an imposing building erected in the reign of the enlightened King Charles III. Together with the adjoining Palacio Goyeneche (Academia de San Fernando) it gives the first section of the Calle de Alcalá a severely disciplined aspect in Italian style. Francesco Sabatini, the King's favorite architect, who followed him from Naples to Spain, took as his model for the building (1769) Italian Renaissance palaces. In 1928-29 the palace was extended and the facade was given a new doorway, designed by Pedro de Ribera in 1710, which originally adorned another building.
