Description
The Mercedarian Convent of the Immaculate Conception, also known as Las Góngoras after its founder Don Juan de Góngora, is a typical example of the architecture of Madrid in the second half of the 17th C. The well-preserved church, with a nave and short transepts, is dominated by a dome which gives an impression of space and light.

In the streets and squares of the surrounding area - Calles Gravina, Libertad, Fernando VI, San Lucas and San Mateo, Plaza de la Villa de París, Plaza de las Salesas - can be observed the changes in the layout of the old 17th C. city brought about by the expansion which took place in the reign of Isabella II.
