Macon, formerly an important inland port on the Ocmulgee River, is now the cultural and economic centre of a large surrounding area. It has a number of well preserved old buildings, including City Hall, the Grand Opera House, Hay House, in Italian Renaissance style, and the birthplace of the poet Sydney Clayton Lanier.
To the east of the town
is the Ocmulgee National Monument. Originally (10,000 years ago) an Indian settlement of the prehistoric Mound Builder culture, the site was still occupied in the 19th c.
